Toyota IST was released for sale in May 2002 as a new type 2-BOX car. The main target of IST was young people and the concept was "Toyota IST for your 1st", to provide "the greatest compact car for mobility life".
The characteristics of Toyota IST was its style. IST adopts a wide front grille, wheel archs protruded at the four corners and large 15‐inch tires. These features intergrade the sense of activity and high quality of SUV. The interior of IST is simple and dynamic, which is achieved by combining the horizontal / vertical basic configuration with rounding of front and rear parts.
Toyota IST has compact body, but its indoor space is comfortable enough to accommodate 4 people. The area around instrumental panel, door trim and heater control panel contains metallic decoration, which provides the interior with sense of unity and high quality. The meter device is installed in the center, minimizing the eye movement and providing higher visual performance. Storage space is very substantial. The car is equipped with 6:4 split and collapsible rear seats, rear 2-way deck under tray (for FF model) and multi-use car storage box with lighting.
Toyota IST has engine types of 1.5 liter and 1.3 liter in-line 4‐cylinder DOHC BEAMS engine with the combination of 4‐speed AT called the Super ECT.
The driving system can either be FF or flex full time 4WD for 1.5 liter model. The vehicle is also equipped with various safety equipment such as dual SRS airbag, ABS, brake assist function etc. For certain grades, discharge head lamps are adopted as its standard equipment to increases the visibility at night time.
There was a minor change for Toyota IST in May 2015, in which interior, exterior and technical equipment were improved.

Vehicle is good it had some problem with the AC however was resolved by our local mechanics
Good day,I received the car and I like the IST, I am glad it looks almost the same as seen on pictures, However I was quite disappointed with following.Firstly, the car had no Jack and wheel spanner so I had to buy these are the border because these are necessary requirements. Secondly the car bearings are finished and so the car makes a funny noise. I am wondering how the car pasted the inspection because I thought by paying for inspection you would rectify these small issues. The inspection company also did not do a good job because these are the things they were supposed to check for these things.

Toyota IST 2012/6
In addition, all models of IST were fitted with VSC(vehicle stability control) and TRC (traction control).VSC was intended to prevent the side slips of a car and improve excellent stability of vehicle. TRC was provided to control driving force on a slippery road surface.
To improve the visibility of the meter, the design was changed. A new blue metallic color was added to the existing 8 exterior colors.

Toyota IST 2007/7
The main point of the change was its new design and proportion integrating SUV and compact 2-BOX car characteristics.
The total length of the Toyota IST's body is compact, less than 4 meters in size, but the width was expanded to 1725 mm, enabling the creation of the silhouette that did not exist before.
For the interior, Toyota IST adopts a unique center cluster, drawing an impressive smooth curve. It includes speedometer and tachometer placed on concentric rings.
The wheelbase was enhanced, enabling a spacious indoor.The rear-seat passenger's foot space was expanded as well as the luggage space.
The displacement of two engines, 1.5 liter and 1.8 liter, were increased. 1.5 liter engine is equipped with continuously variable transmission Super CVT-i, while 1.8 liter engine is available with electronically controlled 4-speed AT Super ECT. Driving type is basically FF, but 1.5 liter model is also available with 4WD.
All grades of Toyota IST adopt safety equipment such as supplemental restraint system (SRS) airbags for driver and passenger, side curtain airbags, active head restraints etc. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) are available as options for 1.8liter model.
